Poker Etiquette: The Do's and Don'ts of the Card Game
From the weekly nondescript matches played at home to tournaments played at the international level, there would always be two qualities that make up a champion poker player. One of these qualities is obviously skill, as it is the very aspect that makes a champion poker player successful.
The other one is not as apparent though as it is in fact often overlooked particularly by those who do not see poker as a social activity that has it own norms and customs. This other quality is etiquette and it is best for players to acquaint themselves with it early on so as to prevent any embarrassing slip ups in the future that may arise from poker etiquette ignorance.
Here are some guidelines that must be known in order for one to be at the right side of poker etiquette.
Don't be a slowpoke
First of the things that one must remember when dealing with poker etiquette is that although the card game is one where strategizing is crucial, it is still very much impolite for one to take too much time when it is one's time to take action. Apart from annoying the other players at the table, taking too long to take one's turn will disrupt the flow of a poker match.
Do pay attention
Being unaware if it is one's turn can be overlooked if one is still an absolute newbie player of the card game but having to be reminded that it is already one's turn when one is not that new to the game is very much unacceptable. As such, it is best that one pays attention to the event unfolding at the table as being caught unawares when it is one's turn to act leaves a bad impression to others at the table.
Don't splash the pot
Splashing the pot refers to throwing one's bet in an untidy manner thereby creating confusion regarding the actual amount that one has put into the pot. Not only is the action distasteful, it is also disruptive which makes avoiding the said action the more crucial for players who intend to be good and respectful ones at the table.
Do be a sport
This goes without saying but many players are still unable to keep their mouths shut whenever they are at the losing end in a match. Such actions only present a negative image and should be avoided if one wants to seen as player that knows the etiquette of poker.
These simple guidelines for poker etiquette will be very much helpful for those who are intent on becoming not just successful players of the card game but also players that make playing poker more fun and pleasurable not just for one's self but also for others that are at the table.
