Poker School - Getting to Know Poker's Different Main Variants
For most people, especially those that do not have any inkling to the basics of the popular card game, poker is a name for a single, monolithic card game. This misleading notion will surely change especially when one takes time to delve into the game which will give one an overview as to how vast poker is as far as the number of card games that can be considered as its variants is concerned.
Differences over poker's main aspects such as the cards that are dealt to each player, the betting mechanics that are used, and the hand value system that is employed are often the main reasons as to why there is a multitude of poker variants that one can choose from. It is also because of these recurring differences why one can categorize the different variations of the popular card game into three groups: stud, community, and draw poker.
Variants that are listed under the category community poker are generally distinguished with the faced-up cards that are dealt at the center of the table. They are called community cards (hence the name of the category) since they can be used by all of the players at the table in conjunction with their own cards to come up with the best hand for the round to win the pot.
Another category of poker card games are the stud variants. In such variants of the card game, a combination of faced-up and faced-down cards are dealt to players over the whole course of the round. Like in the case of community variants, some cards are hidden from view which makes thorough strategizing a critical part of their game play.
On the other hand, variations of the popular card game that can be considered as draw games does not feature any exposed cards. Instead, each and every card that will be dealt to the players will be exclusive to the player that holds them. Players are given the chance to enhance their chances of winning by swapping weak cards in their hands with better cards that would be drawn from the deck. With no card exposed at the table, games under this variant can be seen as less strategic than their counterparts in the other variation categories since luck plays the central role in coming up with the best hand to win the pot.
These different variants of poker give each player of the card game a chance to broaden their horizons to prevent them from confining themselves to a variant or two which would be a terrible waste of an otherwise richly diverse card game.
