Poker School - Comprehending the Poker Tactic that is Check-Raising
Check-raising, when used in the context of the popular card game that is poker, is one of the most popular tactic that is employed by its players, possibly only eclipsed by that other tactic, bluffing. Much like bluffing, check-raising is done with the use of clever deception as it is also a strategy that relies upon the wrong assumption of the other players at the poker table. It is because of this deceiving nature why some players, particularly the new ones, detest the tactic of check-raising.
Simply put, check-raising is a tactic that is done by checking with one's hand with the aim of doing a raise on the same round after the other players have put their bets on the pot. This nature of check-raising has made it appear to be a rather patent ploy of deception which has made some players apprehensive of it.
Such a reaction is understandable but it would be beneficial for such players to realize that while the tactic may be very deceiving, they must also consider that the game that they are playing is all about the effective use of deception and they would be very much in a disadvantage if they are to continue such reactions and turn their back completely to an otherwise effective tactic such as check-raising.
Like in all other maneuvers in poker, assessing the situation is of the utmost importance for the success of a planned check-raise. First of such elements to be considered is the other players at the table. For check-raising to be successful, one has to be sure that one will be called by a player with a worst hand than what one has. One also has to be certain that a succeeding player will bet after one checks since everyone checking will deny one the chance the raise the pot later on.
The other important element that one has to consider before embarking on a check-raising spree is the player positions. When one does not have that strong of a hand, it would be best if the probable player that will bet will be positioned on one's right so as to force players to call a double bet for them to stay in the pot. Otherwise, it would be best if the probable bettor is positioned on one's left so that they will have a chance to call one's raise.
At first, check-raising may appear to be an undignified tactic in the poker world due to its notoriously deceptive nature but once one fully grasps its effectiveness and the essential nature of poker itself, one will come to realize that understanding check-raising is a must for every player of poker as it is a terrible tactic to waste.
